Inland Knights - Bad Man EP
Drop Music - DROP058
1. Ends Don't Meet
2. Back Chat
Inland Knights return to their own label, Drop Music, after handing over the
reigns on the last few releases to James Curd, Jay West, Kinky Movement and
Larry Fives. Drop has been home to the Knights since 1998 and in the past
decade has become something of a deep house institution. It's one of those
rare labels that people will buy without needing to hear the music. It's
one of those rare labels that has made such a significant impact on dance
music that DJs walk into record shops and say "I'm after music that sounds
like Drop".
The quality control on the label has proved second to none over the past
decade, something that will be proved later this year when Drop release a
'10 years of.' CD compilation which will have one disc mixed by the Inland
Knights and the other unmixed and featuring some of Drop's finest moments
alongside new remixes of classic Drop by some of house music's biggest
players.
Laurence Richie and Andy Riley have found some fine form of late: their San
Francisco Sessions compilation for Om Records is flying off the shelves, a
recent production for Raise Recordings has been licensed to Mark Farina's
forthcoming Fabric CD and they've displayed a different side to their sound
with a great reworking of Candle Apple's soulful cut "Step 2 Me", which is
also doing big things. The quality they've become known for over the past
ten years shows no sign of letting up and they continue to experiment with
new sounds and styles, which the 'Bad Man' EP shows perfectly.
'Ends Don't Meet' utilises a big sub bass, together with twisted vocals and
some techy and bleepy stabs to create an irresistable groove for those small
dark clubs with low ceilings.
'Back Chat' takes a more fun approach with a ragga vocal sitting over
snappy, choppy beats before a trademark IK hollow sounding bassline is
introduced.

Comments: The best Drop in a while, very reminiscent of the earlier stuff from the late 90's - i.e. 100% dancefloor house music, which
will fit into house/tech/funky sets & not sound out of place in any of them. Which was the beauty of Drop in the first place! Both tracks kicking
it, top stuff.
