North American tour dates throughout 2010 + World Tour beginning January 2011On November 9, Mark Farina releases Mushroom Jazz 7 – the latest installment in the groundbreaking compilation series.

Mushroom Jazz 7 features Farina’s signature hip-hop, jazz-infused, downtempo, dance floor friendly beats. This time around, he deftly mixes and arranges tracks by some of the world’s most dynamic artists including Andy Caldwell, Billa Qause, Colossus, Dave Allison, Derek Dunbar, The Hue, Giano & Michael Knight, Jazz Spastiks, Joshua Heath, Lurob, Slakah the Beatchild, Tommy Largo and Uneaq. The result; a seamless, crisp, hypnotic and sublime journey – true to the easygoing essence that is Mushroom Jazz.

Mark Farina developed his musical tastes in Chicago listening to house music on the radio while living in one of the country’s most primordial breeding grounds for the genre. Farina first started wandering from his passion for the purist forms of House, which grew into his trademark down tempo style – Mushroom Jazz, when he was DJing in both the main and the side rooms at Chicago nightclubs in the same night. Mark experimented with a slower style, dropping De La Soul, Herbie Hancock, funk classics and other stuff that wasn’t being played in the main room. This resulted in a small run of mix tapes entitled “Mushroom Jazz” which Mark released featuring his jazzy down tempo style. The Mushroom Jazz tapes grew from the first run of 50 copies to the next run at 500 copies. Today, these early releases are highly sought after items around the globe.

In 1992, Mark Farina, along with Patty Ryan, created the legendary weekly Jazid Up club night in San Francisco. There, Mark honed his signature style and established a fanatical, cult-like following for himself and the “Mushroom Jazz” sound. Finally, after five years, the club closed its doors and Mark and Patty teamed up with Om Records to release the Mushroom Jazz CD series…And the rest is history.

Now, after six volumes and extensive worldwide tours, Mark Farina brings you MJ7 – Farina’s most ambitious release to date, showcasing the evolution of decades of mastery in defining the genre he’s credited with creating. Make sure you check out Mark Farina on the road this fall when the Mushroom Jazz World Tour hits a city near you.

(Mushroom Jazz 7 is available through a special pre-order in several different formats: Collector’s Edition, CD + Digital Download Package and CD Package only. Free music is delivered immediately upon Pre-Order. Those interested in purchasing the Limited Edition Collector’s Edition from djmarkfarina.net will receive: Autographed six panel digipak CD of Mushroom Jazz 7, Mark Farina iPhone App (powered by Mix.dj), Digital download of Mushroom Jazz 7, CD Digital download of all (19) Mushroom Jazz 7 tracks (full length), Digital download of “Mushroom” acapellas & samples (DJ Tool), Digital download of track “Something Cool” by Mark Farina, Digital download of Five (5) unreleased “Mushroom Jazz” mixes by DJ Mark Farina, Digital download of track “Get Me There” by Combined (Bonus Track), Digital download of “Stressin’” (Music Video) and Digital download of Key Art, Electronic PDF and Youtube & Twitter Background artwork. )

On May 12th, 2010, Mos Def and Preservation Hall’s Ben Jaffe met in New Orleans to collaborate on a song to benefit The Gulf Relief Foundation, an organization providing relief for those affected by the Gulf oil spill catastrophe.

In an all-night jam session less than 12 hours later, they recorded the song at Preservation Hall with the newly formed Gulf Aid Allstars: Mos Def, Lenny Kravitz, Trombone Shorty, Tim Robbins and The Preservation Hall Jazz Band. The result: a remake of the New Orleans rhythm and blues classic “It Ain’t My Fault”.

The track and accompanying music video of the session are now available for download exclusively on iTunes with all proceeds to benefit The Gulf Relief Foundation.

JOSH WINK / DERRICK CARTER / MARK FARINA / DOC MARTIN have all been nominated for America’s Best DJ.

The staff of DJ Times have chosen the 100 DJ/NOMINEES, using their career accomplishments & current drawing power as basic criteria for inclusion.

ONLY ONE VOTE PER EMAIL ACCOUNT WILL BE TABULATED! You must fill out the voting ballot entirely in order to cast your vote. Each tabulated ballot will be given a chance to WIN VALUABLE PRIZES — trips to Las Vegas, DJ equipment & more. When you vote, you are automatically eligible to win.

Again, vote only once, but you are allowed to CHOOSE UP TO 5 of your favorite U.S.-based DJs in your one voting session. Total points will be spread out evenly—so if you wish to support only one DJ, for example, then simply vote for one. But you may vote for UP TO 5 DJs. It’s up to you.

Thank you, enjoy & good luck!

Following the worldwide success of Farina’s GEOGRAFFITI EP, GLA releases That’s How | Remixes. The package features four powerful reinterpretations of the single by Chuck Love, Sonny Fodera, JT Donaldson and Ken ECB.

Chuck Love takes you on a minimal, sample studded ride into late night, peppering this luscious river of sound with just the right bleeps and bumps from his signature melodica.

Ken ECB offers up a neck snapping beat with a low slung bass line, rudeboy Moog bursts and a thick velvet-esque synth line. He ties it all together with the original vocal pieces that clearly implies “Playtime is over, it’s time to get down!”

Sonny Fodera delivers a banging rework; tub thumping and a jackin’ delight, subtle layers of keys and chopped vocals keep this track moving along without ever losing energy.

JT Donaldson brings his remix south of the border with it’s Latin laced keys and flute arrangements. A rich and full bass line keeps the track grounded on the dance floor, while the sultry keys and horns lift it high and keep it funky.

Some DJ Feedback:
“I love JT’s productions, def my favorite.”

Geom

“Great release from Great Lake Audio. Full support on this. Love the remixes. JT Donaldson does it again 5/5.”

- Hector Moralez

“Great package of remixes. Hard to choose between the Fodera, ECB and JT mixes. A winner!”

Farina wastes no time getting started with the track “That’s How,” dropping into a straight-ahead house beat and layering swirling polyrhythmic vocal samples with minimal piano chords. The opening song also finds the DJ looping a vocal track of himself, explaining just how he creates his music. It’s a fascinating chance to hear an insight into the basis of the artist’s creation while grooving along to his pulsing mix. The amount of found vocal samples alone suggests that tracks like this will quickly find their way into any DJ’s live arsenal.

The disc effortlessly flows together, mixing gorgeously-voiced female singers, lush jazz environments, deceptively complex poly-rhythms and ecstatic party call-to-arms vocal samples. The highlight of Geograffiti is the track “Talk, Sex.” The drums continue to pulse and Farina drops in another minimally crafted piano line. Overhead we hear a harmonized vocal riff, singing the title line. And then come the samples. A space-infused synth line. A tweaked bit of rapper speak. Old school hip hop samples. The song grooves along to its own genius, flippantly offering new layers to the listeners’ ears, and then, without warning, dropping them out in favor of newer, fresher samples. Farina builds up and tears down his composition, all while keeping the party going. In the first track, Farina remarks that “…the music settles into a kind of hypnotic rhythm of sound.” He knows his music all too well
