Originally released in 2009, Lance DeSardi’s “Sheepskin City” and “Running Amok” were both favorites with a number of respected DJs. We thought it was essential for us to revisit these cuts and bag some fresh reworks from our BTB crew.

D-Edge Records, distributed by Kompakt

Prominent Brazilian club, D-Edge are happy to announce their next release is a mix CD compiled and programmed by The Classic Music Company co-boss, Luke Solomon.

Recently described by Andrew Weatherall on BBC 6 Music as the ‘unsung hero of British house music’, the long-standing house producer, label boss, A&R man, DJ & live performer, engineer and peerless selector has been a fixture on the house scene for decades. Luke’s Classic label, run with Chicago legend Derrick Carter, has also been responsible for a plethora of seminal and idiosyncratic house cuts and has now been revived to a rapturous reception.

D-Edge, meanwhile, has had another excellent 12 months and has continued to change the musical landscape in Sao Paolo & indeed Brazil each and every weekend with its forward-looking bookings. The club’s owner, Renato Ratier, goes back a long way with Luke, and it’s for that reason he has managed to coax a very rare official mix CD out of this unique DJ.

In this day and age, some could ask, what’s the point of releasing a mixed collection of tracks in a physical format? After all, with the availability of podcasts and DJ mixes throughout the virtual space, it is surely a sysiphic task to try and make a statement through any other media. But that’s exactly the point of this compilation. It is meant to stay, to exceed any shelflife and avoid being adrift in the flood of disposable material. Thus, if the original question still holds any ground, it’ll be easily answered by listening to this album’s very content.

Luke’s mix is a taught selection of moody and broody house and techno. It waves and skilfully snakes its way through sultry vocal stuff, tightly wired synths and bare machine grooves of a decidedly timeless nature.

Contemporary names like Kink, Neville Watson and Kris Wadsworth sit next to the more mature likes of Chicago’s Boo Williams: the results, though, are always engaging and never obvious.   Whether arms are flailing and the sounds are unhinged, whether pushing through more frantic techno or going deeper underground, the desire to dance always remains, as trippy overtones gently percolate all around.

Along with D-Edge’s reputation for futuristic clubbing experiences, this finely mixed selection from Luke Solomon is as fresh as you’d expect.

‘I was asked to write some words about my next release on Classic.
Some of you may and some of you may not know that the dance music community lost an incredible
talent close to a year ago. That person was not only an incredible talent, he was also my friend.
I wrote this song a couple of years before we lost Kenny. The subject matter was for something very
different, but it related to something that equally effected Kenny and myself. I had Jon’s voice in my
head whilst writing and we set about recording and finishing it.
The original song was quite different, but I remixed it with Kenny in mind. I wanted it to be something
that he would play and connect with. It was kind of therapeutic for me, and a fitting way to say
goodbye.
I played the song to both Ewan and Andy, and they both wanted to remix it.
In fact it was Ewan that suggested that he would like to donate some money towards something
“Kenny.”
My good friend Roaul at Faith, also a close friend of Kenny’s set up a fund for Kenny, and along side
Kenny’s girlfriend Wendy, we are looking at buying a bench for Kenny in Brighton…’
