Having recorded a myriad of house, techno, electro and other dancefloor-orientated styles for such respected labels as R&S, Buzzin’ Fly, Dessous and more, as well as delivering a critically-lauded debut LP, perhaps it should come as no surprise to find King Roc spreading the love across two diverse sets – one that showcases straight-up cutting edge house and techno and another, his ‘Bestival Classixxx‘, that brings together legendary acid house-era Chicago and New York house. Massive track here. Best described as Prog meets Electro meets Nu Disco. Really pretty track with a kick that would destroy a rave.

Ignite – Mason
Super dark, minimal Techno, couldn’t be more different than the first track. The last drop would EXPLODE at a rave.

Who Killed Trance Refurb – Mason
Really cool 8-bit interpretation of the first track. Really took me by surprise how awesome it is.

BONUS:
Perfect (Exceeder) [Club Mix] – Mason vs. Princess Superstar
The reason these dudes are as big as they are. One of the tracks that defines Electro House to me.

Back from his binge, Riva Starr is blaring the trumpets up on his new Balkan-tinged tech-house EP on Made to Play.Text by Flora Wong | Published 29 October 2009

Finely crafting wonky tech-house since back in the day, Brick Lane-based producer Stefano Miele aka Riva Starr has been drawing inspiration from energetic traditional Balkan music for his most recent ventures. In a move from his classic house sounds to more brass-heavy / ethnic influenced areas, his distinctive samples have been freaking out dancefloors everywhere. Having remixed everyone from Renaissance Man, Andre Crom and Malente to more pop acts like Gossip, Little Boots and Lily Allen. Having a past of epic releases on DirtyBird and Southern Fried Records, he is now set to unleash his double A-side ‘I Was Drunk’/'Black Cat White Cat’ on Made to Play, complete with a remix competition and a mad gypsies-in-the-hospital video collaborating with Nôze.

Dazed Digital: This video with Nôze. It is madness. Pure madness. Was it made whilst drunk?
Riva Starr: Clean answer: Nope I just drank some soda and lime. Dirty answer: Well mate, drunk is the least of it. There was a friend coming to visit me from Amsterdam that day…

DD: If you could play any instrument what would it be?
Riva Starr: Trombone! Or gong!… Well maybe gong, how cool must it be to be the gong player in an orchestra?

DD: What do you think inspired this movement from wonky house / techno to include these ethnic / gypsy sounds a la your What is Guru remix / the new EP? Do you think your older stuff like ‘House Music’ and ‘I Jack U’ etc is a far jump compared to your sound today… or is it essentially a natural progression?
Riva Starr: I’ll be serious on this one, my early productions were kind of “I’m looking for my style, I like this and that… let me find out what works better for me…” then a couple of years and several gigs later here I am. That ethnic gypsy sound is nothing more than a little part of what house music is. I love house music because it’s a folder of grooves. It’s like a magician’s hat if you know what I mean… you just put your hands in there and see what comes out of it!

DD: What inspires you? / How do you find your samples?
Riva Starr: I still buy a lot of old vinyls and listen to a lot of different music. I love music… It drives my life. Everything original draws my attention. Watch out as my classical Chinese music period is going to land soon!

DD: Where are the best places to hang out on Brick Lane?
Riva Starr: My studio, then Rough Trade (because of the free wifi).

DD: What are you listening to now?
Riva Starr: Classical Chinese music!

DD: Is there anyone you really want to collaborate with?
Riva Starr: A lot of people. I already have a few ongoing collaborations for some releases on my Snatch! label… I can’t say more right now… But I’ve done some exciting collaborations on my album as well, first of all with Made To Play boss Jesse Rose (one of the producers that drew me into house music) and Nôze (one of the freshest talents around) and then with this young MC called Trim, also very talented.

DD:… these dudes.. ‘Genghis Clan’, what are they about?
Well, you know… when you listen to classic Chinese stuff… you never know where you end up!

Track A kicks things off in style with a couple of naughty samples from a cartoon monkey band (who could that be?) building into clav keys and vocoded vocals. A party tune! ,pure and simple. Miss this at your peril!

Track B takes things deeper with a locked-in and tracky groove built for the early hours. Check out the vocal snips and acid riffs!. This has been doing the rounds for a few weeks and feedback has been crazy.

DJ COMMENTS

Carlos ‘lawnchair generals’ - Like the mafia in The Godfather 3… just when I think I’m done with “funky house”… they pull me back in! These are both fun, musical, and funky as hell. Cheers, gents!
Giom – Both tracks are awesome, I’m really into this release. That acid riff on B is FAT. Thanks a lot for this, will try these out at my next gig.
Johnny Fiasco – Ok this is off the shizzle – most def feeling this!!!
DJ Sneak – Deep jackin funkilicious, i’m all over it
Miles Maeda – love the simple, bleepy, r&b rawness!!
Raoul Belmans - Both tracks very playable! Full support!
Mark Farina – Loved the last one! Digging this one even more! Will be in my sets this weekend for sure. Thanks!

‘Beautiful But Weird’ by King Roc is released today, Monday 24th August, by Process Recordings.

The EP also features remixes by Sasse, Stel, Alex Caytas & Aleks Patz, & Jericho Dub

About:

The majority of King Roc‘s critically acclaimed debut CD Chapters was aimed at the home listener. Which is why the next single is two sets of dancefloor remixes of Chapters’ standout vocal track Beautiful But Weird, featuring the vocalist Barbara Alcindor. Part of French-German #1 pop group Family Affair, she also has a voice that led Phonica to call her last track Je Suis Differente “easily one of the sexiest pieces of deep house we’ve heard in a long time”. (Je Suis, incidentally, was King Roc’s sideproject with Giles Smith, Two Armadillos – and the followup to Two Armadillos’s Beatport #1 deep house remix of the Discowboys).

Anyhow, two sets of remixes? The first set includes Finland’s Sasse, Swedish duo Alex Caytas & Aleks Patz, Greece’s Stel, and King Roc’s own warm deep-house remix as Jericho Dub. The second set, out some weeks later, will include a Clouded Vision remix that’s wonderfully unlike the original, and King Roc’s own dancefloor-centric mix.

Sasse you will already know. The “benevolent dictator” of Finland’s well-known moodmusic, he runs a label that has released DJ T., Henrik Schwarz, Dirt Crew, Ewan Pearson, Naughty, Kiki, Nick Chacona, Spirit Catcher, Dan Berkson, the wonderful Star You Star Me, and of course quite a number of his own productions. With Ewan Pearson and Darshan Jesrani, he was responsible for Tracey Thorn‘s solo track “It’s All True” – one of our favourite major-label tracks of all time.

The other remixers, meanwhile, are newer producers King Roc specifically aimed to work with for the release. Alex Caytas and Aleks Patz are two thirds of the trio Sour Grapes, but their work together tends toward a far techier style. And Stel, meanwhile, has released on Renaissance, Moodmusic, Jesus Loved You, Toolroom, Audio Therapy and Dieb Audio, and remixed Digweed, Sander Kleinenberg, Nick Warren, Funkagenda, Gabriel and Dresden…
