Cerebral, powerful and unique best sum up Berlin-based Mary Yuzovskaya’s take on techno.
Despite coming up in the mid-2000s, Mary’s route into techno is as rooted in the culture as it gets. While an initial stint in Berlin cemented a reputation for Mary’s precise approach to her craft as a vinyl-only DJ who explores the subtleties of techno, it was a move to NYC in 2013 which took her career as an artist to the next level. Numerous residencies, not least a three-year run at the influential Unter, helped refine Yuzovskaya’s unhurried, storytelling sound whilst developing a dedicated audience on the dance floor and the wider techno scene.
Away from the decks and studio, her work as vinyl distribution manager at legendary Brooklyn record shop Halcyon provided the perfect stepping-off point for her vinyl-only imprint, Monday Off. A label she neatly describes as ‘psychedelic techno’, Monday Off has ploughed its furrow since 2017 and has introduced music from some of techno’s most forward-thinking and out-of-the-ordinary artists.
Back in Berlin since 2020, Mary’s momentum continues with a diary that heavily features standout clubs and events like Berghain, Basement (NY), Gare (Porto), Hall (Tallinn), IFZ (Leipzig), Kablys (Vilnus), Pax Romana (Amsterdam), Rote Sonne (Munich), Smart Bar (Chicago) and Tresor (Berlin) whilst releases on such labels as Attic, Kvalia, Mnestic and Semantica, as well as her own Monday Off, help her reach an ever-growing fanbase.
While trends ebb and flow in techno, Mary Yuzovskaya stands steadfast with her singular voice and vision.
